The Devil Makes Three - Do Wrong Right

Alternative Country
2011

Just found out that these guys have 5 more albums. So that's what I'll be doing this weekend. I'm not big into country, but you can't help but like this. Hit after hit after hit...

Immortal Technique - The Martyr (2011)

Underground & Progressive Hip-Hop

The Martyr is relentless. It's apparently a bridge between The 3rd World and the long awaited Middle Passage, which hopefully isn't too far off. He's made it available for free, and encourages you to share.

Puscifer - Conditions Of My Parole (2011)

Trip-Hop, Experimental, Maynard

I'm a huge Maynard fan all around, and Puscifer is no exception. Haunting harmonies and duets accompany trippy beats and industrial aura. I wouldn't recommend this album for Puscifer virgins, and to be honest it's taken Conditions a little longer to seep into my psyche, but in the end Maynard never disappoints. Does make me miss TOOL though...

Random aka Mega Ran - Mega Ran 9

Hip Hop, Underground

So this could be the greatest hip hop concept album of all time. In Mega Ran 9, Random aka Mega Ran, fuses nasty beats with the original soundtrack of Mega Man 9. If you never played Mega Man then this probably isn't a big deal, but if you were lucky enough to grow up during the golden age of video games and experience any of the numerous Mega Man titles, then your in for quite a treat. Not only does the album feature music from the game, but most of the songs revolve around game elements, like bosses, levels, and story lines. Mmmm... nostalgia.

Mega Ran - Splash Woman

Get Set Go - Ordinary World (2006)

Indie Rock, Folk, Melodic

Catchy upbeat acoustic style instrumentals mix with dark sarcastic and cynical lyrics to create a truly refreshing sound in a hopelessly predictable genre. You'll probably regret listening to it after each song incessently cycles through your head at work.

Orchid - Capricorn (2011)

Stoner, Retro

Highly anticipated album. Stoner doom metal in the Sabbath style. I'm tired.

Eagles Of Death Metal - Heart On (2008)

Alt Rock, Desert Rock

Fans of Queens Of The Stone Age are probably already familiar with EODM, which could be the most misleading name is music history. There's a story behind the name, but you can look that up yourself. Here's a great quote from co-founder Jesse Hughes regarding the album:

"EODM's latest fabulous weapon, a top-secret music missile, a sonic warhead sexually tipped for her pleasure, shot from the deck of USS EODM Mantastic Fantastic."

Great vintage desert rock & roll. Also, the album  cover is awesome.

Eagles Of Death Metal - Wannabe In LA

Electric Six - Fire (2003)

Funk Rock, New Wave, Disco?

Bought this album many years ago when I visited New York City and I've followed the band ever since. This video is originally what drew me to them, and to this day it's still one of my favorites. Like most white people I'm not much of a dancer, but this album does it to me every time. Of course I make sure to lock myself in the basement first...

XTC - Wasp Star (2000)

New Wave, Alt Rock, Psychedelic Pop

I know I already posted a XTC album a few months back, but I've been listening to this one non stop and had to share.  Is indie pop a genre?

XTC - Boarded Up

KillRadio - Raised On Whipped Cream

Punk, Post-Punk, Revival

This is one of my favorite modern punk albums. Energetic, angry, demanding, everything you want in a punk album. Mixing punk, hardcore, ska and hip-hop, KillRadio tackles a range of societial ills, from public education to modern radio programming. They havn't  released much material, just this full length and a couple of EP's and there are even rumors that the band has split up, but surprise apperances on the Warped Tour have kept the fans hopeful.

KMD - Black Bastards (1994)

Hip-Hop

This little gem was originally set to be released in '94, but apparently Elektra Records found the cover too offensive. Ironically, 8 years later in 2001, Sub Verse Records decided to do the right thing. KMD, which stands for Kausing Much Damage, probably gained most of their modern popularity for launching the career of MF Doom, who later rereleased Black Bastards on his own label Metal Face.  Well the album speaks for itself.  Great nostalgic 90's hip-hop. Try mediafire.

Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math (2011)

Alt Rock, Progressive

Don't worry, it's not really an orchestra, but rather a very refreshing alternitive Atlanta based band which formed in 2005. This is their third and latest album.  Here's a quote from Andy Hull, the band's vocalist, explaining the concept of the album. Very relatable.

"It's a story about a 23-year old who questions everything from marriage to love to religion to sex. Sometimes even for myself, it’s difficult to decipher which one I’m actually talking to. Everything I’ve written in the past has been about those things. This album is the most realized form of my questioning.”

Manchester Orchestra - Mighty

Hefner - Dead Media (2001)

Indie Rock, Urban Folk, Minimal

Discovered this album when it was re-released this year. Pretty cool stuff. Simple & catchy. I'm reading their wiki page now and it looks like this was their last album, so if you like this you'll probably like their older stuff better.

Hefner - When The Angels Play Their Drum Machines

Weedeater - Jason, The Dragon (2011)

Slugde, Stoner

This is a hard one folks. Here's where we seperate the occasional stoner fans from the ones who are up to their dirty disgusting necks.  Jason, The Dragon was released back in March, and it's taken me 6 months to fully realize how good it is. The title and cover art grabbed me right away, but the album took a few listens. As primitive as the album sounds, there's still a lot going on, but it's mostly big drums and classic stoner riffs. Nice gooey heaviness.

The Hellacopters - By The Grace Of God

Garage Rock, Punk

Haven't heard any of their other stuff but this is a great album, came out in 2002. Couldn't find the song I wanted to post but this would be my second choice...

XTC - Black Sea (1980)

New Wave, Alt Rock, Psychedelic Pop

Just started getting into these guys.  I read that XTC is cited one of Primus' biggest influences so I had to check them out. Got this album and their greatest hits. Really weird choppy instrumentals with poppy up front vocals. Awesome.

✝✝✝ (2011)

Alternitive Rock, Deftones

Great little EP from Deftones lead singer Chino Moreno. He teamed up with Shaun Lopez of the band Far, and are rumored to have recored hours of material which they plan on releasing as a series of EP's. Chino describes the project as "minimal and soothing and it's sort of like the stuff I like listening to when I'm not screaming my head off."

Wugazi - 13 Chambers (2011)

Mash Up, Hip-Hop, Alt Rock

This album is sheer fucking genius. The indisputable Wu-Tang Clan meets alt rock legends Fugazi. This album is getting a lot of attention on the internet right now. HIGHLY recommended.

Wugazi - Sleep Rules Everything Around Me

Snot - Get Some (1997)

Nu Metal, Hardcore Punk, Funk Metal

I grew out of all that rap rock shit after high school, but this is one album I refuse to let go. To put these guys in the same category as Limp Bizkit is incredibly misleading, however if you don't like rap rock then chances are you won't like this album. That being said, when it comes to this genre, Snot really is the cream of the crop, I've always considered them the Sublime of Nu Metal bands. Sadly, the group disbanded in '98 after a tragic car accident resulted in the death of singer Lynn Strait and his boxer Dobbs, who will forever be immortalized on the cover of Snot's only album.  A tribute album entitled Strait Up was put together in 2000 by the rest of the band and some of Lynn's close friends from bands like Slipknot, Soulfly, Hed pe, Incubus, Sevendust, Korn and System of a Down, so if this album just isn't enough there's some good tunes on that one too.

Immortal Technique- The 3rd World (2008)

Hip-Hop, Underground, Political

The 3RD World (Technique's last album) came out 4 years ago, and I've been suffering ever since. His lyrics are extremely political and the beats are always top notch.  In a way I find it suspicious that Technique isn't more popular than he is, it's almost as if what he's saying is so close to the truth that it would be detrimental if his music were more widespread. Two albums are rumored to be in the works, but so far no official word has come from Technique's camp, which is why I follow him on Twitter so when an album finally is released, I'll know as soon as possible. He's basically the only rapper whose career I follow intently and although I don't always agree with his political views (most of the time I do), there are very few MC's out there doing what Technique is doing, and none of them do it as well. Technique is also an avid supporter of illegal file sharing, so you can download his music guilt free.

Odd Future - Radical (2010)

Alternative Hip-Hop, LA Collective

Dope. As. Fuck. The second release from the west coast underground hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All.  Radical is everything that's missing from mainstream hip-hop. Abrasive, offensive and not over-produced like so much modern pop rap seems to be.

Odd Future - Turnt Down (Feat. Hodgy Beats)

Odd Future - Salute (Feat. Domo Genesis)

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia (2002)

Progressive Rock, Alt Metal, Psychedelic

These guys are great, although I'm sure there's plenty of Porcupine Tree fans who will hate me for choosing this album to post, as it was their first release on a major label and their most commercially successful album to date. But whatever. It's a great band and if you're not familiar, this album is a great place to start.  I think one of the coolest things about In Absentia, besides the way they seamlessly blend hard metal riffs, acoustics and instrumentals, is that it's a concept album. Well, sort of. Many of the songs on the album conceptually explore the mental progression of a serial killer. And while I don't think that it has ever been officially confirmed by the band, the song titles and lyrics definitely back up that theory. Anyway, I really love this album, made me an instant fan.

Doug Stanhope - Burning The Bridge To Nowhere

Comedy, Stand Up, Vulgar Satire

I should've posted this when it came out but I've been too busy listening to it on a constant loop for the last month. I guess I could waste your time trying to describe Stanhope's style of comedy but I would just end up doing all of us a great disservice. He could be the biggest underground influence in comedy today, and the day Doug dies (which could be any minute now) underground comedy will die with him. He's vulgar, honest, drunk, and as accurate as a comedian can be under those conditions. I truly think the world would be a better place if more people followed Doug's lead, so do us all a favor and after you listen to this album, listen to the rest.

Scissor Sisters - Night Work (2010)

Pop, New Wave, Nu-Disco

Not really sure why I like this album so much. It's poppy, 80's and kinda gay. On the other hand, Night Work is suspiciously catchy and the subject matter is fun and at times hilarious. Not a band I would go and see live, or drive around town blasting out the windows, but I think's it's ok to listen to alone in your room doing coke at 1:30 on a tuesday morning.  This is one of my favorite songs from the album, it's rumored to be about a girl using a dildo on her boyfriend. Classic.

De Staat - Machinery (2011)

Alt Rock, Funk, Pop?

Really cool stuff from the Netherlands that started as a one man project by Torre Florim in 2006, and eventually became De Staat.  This second album is all over the place, and that's a good thing. Rock, pop, funk and hip-hop all contribute to Machinery's insanely catchy collection of jams. Think The Black Keys meets Queens Of The Stone Age meets some pop star I can't think of.

De Staat - Rooster Man

Faith No More - Angel Dust (1992)

Alt Rock, Funk Metal, Mike Patton

My first and favorite Faith No More Album.  Actually I remember buying it very clearly because when I unwrapped and opened the case there were two copies of the CD, obviously a manufacturing error, but I took it as a sign. In my opinion Faith is one of the most underrated bands of the 90's, and when their big hit (Epic) comes on the radio, people usually think it's a Red Hot Chili Peppers b-side. First of all, Mike Patton is one of the greatest vocalists of the last 20 years, and that's not even disputable.  Second, Faith No More mixed funk and metal in a way no other band has ever been able to do, and god knows there are plenty who've tried.  If your new to Faith this is the album to start with.

Rainbows Are Free - Believers In Medicine

Alt Rock, Stoner, Sludge

Really diggin' this record. Old fashioned psychedelic sludge from Oklahoma. Described as "Slamming waves of molten guitar magma" by stonerrock.com. I'm too tired to come up with my own descriptions.

Rainbows Are Free - Are You Dead?

Marcus Miller - Silver Rain (2005)

Funk, Bass, Jazz, Instrumental

Gotta love Marcus Miller.  I remember after I discovered Primus and Les Claypool I was on a constant search for bass heavy music and Marcus was one of the first guys I came across. I'll admit that I haven't even listened to half of his discography, but every album I do pick up is so refreshing that it takes me weeks to put it down.  This one is special to me because I remember taking up oil painting and listening to this album while I painted. Most of the CD is instrumental, but there are a handful of guest vocalists which include Macy Gray (who I'm not a big fan of but she does a great job here) and not too mention guest musicians like Eric Clapton and a bunch of other jazz legends that I probably don't appreciate as much as I should. Grade A funk right here. Marcus is known as one of the best bassists for a reason.

Marcus Miller - Bruce Lee

J Mascis - Several Shades Of Why (2011)

Alt Rock, Acoustic

J Mascis is best known for being the writer, guitarist and singer for alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr. which was one of the original indie bands.  Mascis began writing and recording solo material in '96, shortly before the band disbanded in '97.  To be honest I never really got in Dinosaur Jr. but I still give them a listen every once in awhile. I did however find satisfaction in Mascis' solo material almost immediately.  Several Shades Of Why is so light and uplifting, it'll calm your nerves faster than Malborough.

The Risk Takers (2011)

Hip-Hop, Underground, Collaboration

I know I've been slacking lately so I'm gonna try and post a bunch of shit between tonight and tomorrow.  This is a collaboration between two well known underground MC's and Producers Chuck Bass D and Insight. Most of the new music I post here I know nothing about. Usually I see and album cover I like and read the first paragraph of the review beneath it. So here's part of the review I read. The album is great.

"The Risk Takers" celebrates the style of two MC's & Producers, in a mood of positive emulation. "The Risk Takers" doesn't care about mainstream as much as underground. "Those terms are both overworked. They are the reverses of the same piece. Underground is doing the same calculation than the mainstream with its scenes, tags, clichés. We wanted to escape from that. Escape from the revival Rap Jazzy as well as academic Boom Bap which copies the 95-96 years or the muscular ''white trash'' underground rap. For the last, it might have been difficult, since we are both black..."

So, exit the classic formulas, Count Bass D & Insight have favoured a more subtle universe. The tracks are mixed and self-sufficients, showing on different strokes various atmospheres and moods. We can find here what made us thrill on the first Pharcyde or Deltron 3030. An innocence and a certain Hip-Hop classicism which paradoxically get the agreement of all and overtake the divides of the genre. Maybe this is what means having style and brio.

Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust (2005)

Hip-Hop

I remember my buddy Wolfie coming over to my place in college with this CD, he was really pumped about it. Naturally after he put it on his iPod, he forgot about the physical disc, and it became mine.  This was my first introduction to Sage and is still my favorite album from him. This one marked the first of a three record deal with Epitaph Records, and he has since moved on to the Anti- label.  Rhapsody included this in their '10 best albums by white rappers' list,  incase that does anything for you. Anyway, I really like this one. Also check out his newest release Li(f)e.

Reef - Glow (1997)

Rock, UK

I was in a hurry this morning and I couldn't find my CD case so I just grabbed a bunch of random CD's to listen to on the way to work.  Not surprisingly, most of them were scratched to shit and wouldn't play, but one disc simply labeled 'mix' still did. Most of the songs on that mix were from this album, and it reminded me how great this fucking band is.  I always wondered why Reef wasn't bigger in the Sates, because they have such an acceptable poppy vibe. I hate making comparisons, but if I had to describe their sound the two groups I would probably mention would be AC/DC and Aerosmith, and I'm not a big fan of either.  They somehow combine the elements in those bands to create a brighter, heavier, feel goodyer rock & roll. The best convertible music you'll ever hear.

They also have several compilation albums out, so if you're looking for something more along the lines of a greatest hits, it's out there...

Dredg - Chuckles & Mr. Squeezy (2011)

Alternative, Art Rock, Experimental

One thing about Dredg is that you never know what you're gonna get. I've been following them for a few years, ever since I heard Penguins In The Desert off their '98 album, and with each release they seem to be testing the loyalty of their audience.  If you clicked the preceding link and listened to the song (even just the first 30 sec) you'll notice that the riffs are very raw, and the vocals are scratchy underproduced screams. Their second album was similar but a little more tribal, and the last 3 albums have all been very different, ranging from ambient drums and poppy guitars to experimental sounds and gurgling vocals. Anyway, as unpredictable and confusing as Dredg can be, Chuckles & Mr. Squeezy is a change for the better, no matter how temporary it may be. I guess you could call it their indie pop album, and it's full of great jams, with no screaming, progressive guitars, tight drums and conservative synths. I'm sure there are some Dredg fans who are very dissapointed, but I'm not one of them.

Dredg - Another Tribe

Deep Sea Green - Valsorda (2011)

Hard Blues-Rock, Psychedelic

Another band I know nothing about, but the album was too good not to share.  6 tracks of unbelievably classic bluesy psychedelic goodness. For fans of The Black Keys. Here's some info from their myspace:

The hard-blues/rock roots band DeepSeaGreen formed in 2008 and consists of brothers Jon and Daniel Jefford, Trent Halliday and Marco Menestrina. All the members with the exception of Italian born Marco originally hail from the East End of London. The band has just returned from Italy recording Valsorda, a 6 track EP of new material. Valsorda can be streamed and purchased from the DeepSeaGreen store on their webpage, and will be available digitally at the end of May. For more information visit www.deepseagreen.co.uk

Kmfdm - Wtf?! (2011)

Alt Rock, Industrial, Electronic, Male & Female Vocals

It's finally here! Actually WTF?! came out a couple weeks ago, but I'm still winding down.  Hopefully you already know a little bit about KMFDM, but if not here's a quick rundown: KMFDM, which is an acronym for a German phrase which loosely translates to No Pity For The Majority, have been frontrunners in the industrial game since the late 80's, and are one of the most respected and progressive bands in the genre, so you can imagine how pumped I was a few years ago when I popped my KMFDM cherry.  I knew this album was coming out awhile ago, so for the last 6 months the anticipation has been building.  The album cover is classic KMFDM.  They've almost always used art by English artist Adrian Hughes, who has basically turned me on commercial art with his breathtaking prints which are usually done in that  Russian constuctivist style (I hope that's right, I only took 1 year of art history).  Anyways, like most KMFDM albums, there's a lot going on here.  You have vocals which are provided by founder Sascha Konietzko as well as Long Island native Lucia Cifarelli, who adds a feminine touch to the awesome brutality. Politically charged lyrics are a staple of any KMFDM record, but they never take away from the celebratory attitude the band has done such a great job creating.  Love this band, love this album. Maybe you will too.

KMFDM - Rebels In Kontrol

Edwyn Collins - Loosing Sleep (2010)

Alt Rock, Pop, Irish

This is an album I stumbled upon last summer and it turned out to be pretty good.  Edwyn Collins is apparently a solo musician from Endinburgh, Scotland and he's been at it since 1989.  This is his seventh release, so if you like it there's plenty more to check out. It's this cool style of folky rock, think Franz Ferdinand meets Elvis Costello. I really know nothing about this guy so this is a short one.  Sorry, I'll try and post another one today.

Edwyn Collins - Bored

Puscifer - V is for Vagina (2007)

Trip-Hop, Experimental, Maynard

Puscifer is the unexpected side project from Maynard James Keenan, the cosmic pilot behind A Perfect Circle and true alternative rock giant, TOOL.  If you know either band then you already know Maynard is a very talented individual, and Puscifer seems to magnify that creativity.  Described by Maynard as an outlet for his 'creative subconscious' puscifer.com is also the source for Maynard movies, clothing, accessories and even dog toys. The solo side of Maynard is very different from what you hear in APC and TOOL, it's much more 'listenable' and not as grounded to a specific genre, but still far from mainstream acceptance. This is the first release from 2007, and if you like what you hear I highly encourage you to check out the other remix albums and EP's, because there are many hidden gems in every album, this one just happens to be hit after hit.

Puscifer - Momma Sed

Maynard also released a documentary in 2010 alongside Eric Glomski which delves into his newfound hobby and passion of wine making. Blood Into Wine is extremely interesting, informative and funny, and features appearances from Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk, Milla Jovovich, Tim Alexander and Tim & Eric. If you don't know who any of those people are then you probably shouldn't even be reading this blog. Really great flick. Here's the trailer...

Free Energy - Stuck On Nothing (2010)

Indie Rock, Power Pop

I forgot about how good this album was until it came on shuffle.  Found it last fall on a great indie music site Drowned In Sound, which I check out every so often to see what's new in the indie scene.  Really catchy poppy stuff, and I'm surprised I liked it as much as I did.  I'm on a few different sites right now and apparently Free Energy was named one of the best new bands of 2010 by Rolling Stone and was praised as "excellent" by Spin magazine, not that you should give a fuck about what Rolling Stone has to say but I'm running out of shit to write.  They also supported Weezer on a recent tour. Ok, that's all I got. Enjoy.

The Book Of Mormon (2011)

Soundtrack, Musical, Broadway

I was secretly listening to this yesterday at work and it took every ounce of energy I had to hold back the laughs.  The musical itself, which I'm dying to see, has been nominated for 14 Tony awards, and over 20 other awards of which I have no information/interest.  If you're familiar with Matt & Trey then you sort of know what to expect. They've been doing South Park for 15 seasons and have written plenty of songs  for the series that are grammy worthy, but the songs in this musical are so epic and beautiful that I was literally getting chills listening to this album.  You might be a little reluctant to give this a shot because it is after all the soundtrack to a play, but the plot definitely translates through the music.  It's basically about two Mormon missionaries who travel to Africa to convert the natives there, while lovingly poking fun at classic Broadway and religion along the way.  I'm on wikipedia right now and it says that this album isn't 'officially' available until May 17, but I'm sure if you look hard enough you'll find it. I did.

The Book Of Mormon - I Believe

Killing Joke (2003)

Alt Rock, Industrial, Post-Punk

So incase you don't already know, Killing Joke is the shit.  They've been around a long time, since the late 70's, and have been a heavy influence for major players like Nirvana, Foo Fighters, NIN, Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, etc.  When describing Killing Joke's sound the first word that comes to mind is savage.  Big drums, raw vocals and unpredictable guitars.  They've withstood all the major rock trends; glam rock, punk, grunge, hardcore, and have always maintained a hard consistent sound, while not catering to their audience or being afraid to experiment. They have a pretty impressive repertoire, and some releases are definitely stronger than others.  This 2003 self-titled release is among my favorites. The Joke at their best. Surprisingly uplifting.

Killing Joke - You'll Never Get To Me

Tyler, The Creator - Goblin (2011)

Hip-Hop, Alternative

I've been listening to this album for a few days and I'm still not quite sure what to think. It's definitely different... There's something very infectious about Tyler The Creator, but I have no idea what it is. He's like the David Lynch of hip-hop.  Apparently Tyler is part of a LA collective called Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA) that specializes in surreal and alternative hip-hop, and have released over 15 albums under various names. Tyler is the only one I've heard so far, but I'm very intrigued. The album is weird, dark, vulgar, revealing and slowly growing on me. The weed helps. Check out the video for Yonkers, it's what made me want to hear the rest.

Atlantis - Mistress Of Ghosts (2011)

Instrumental, Breakbeat, Experimental

Great instrumental stuff from the Netherlands. Electronica beats mixed with strings and ambient atmosphere.  Really don't know what else to say about this album, just that I started listening to it last night and thought it was good enough to post.  It's the soundtrack to the most epic movie that was never made. Perfect music for doing shit around the house.  Here's a sample. Great build.

Funeral InTheMirror - Old Wolf Thoughts (2010)

Indie, Melodic

One of my favorite albums in recent years.  Funeral InTheMirror is a musical project formed by James Pinkstone and Joe DeRosa, who is better known for his comedic talent (maybe you've seen him on Premium Blend or Comedy Central Presents?) The entire album is incredibly melodic & catchy with a They Might Be Giants meets Faith No More kind of vibe. At least that's what I get.  All it took was one song and I had to buy the whole album, and I'm glad I did.  This one's gonna be hard to find if you're doing torrents, so you're probably better off just spending the incredibly reasonable 9 bucks and downloading it from Amazon or iTunes. You can preview more tracks on their Myspace

And if you're a comedy junkie like me,  you'll also want to check out Joe DeRosa's debut album on Comedy Central Records, The Depression Auction. Joe rips on weddings, reality shows, parents, the Insane Clown Posse and himself. Very funny stuff. Preview tracks @ Amazon
